On a visit to the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok, I saw this dazzling line up of gold Buddha statues bordering all sides of the quadrangle of the outer courtyard.
Celestial shop front mannequins, nearly all identical but with some dressed in fine silk sashes. The light was so strong that the figures, all behind glass, appeared to dissolve and shimmer, stripped of all detail.
Looking again from different angles the figures became broken up by shadows and reflections of the images cast from the other sides.
Some years later I found the notes and sketches I had made at the time and painted about seventy images in an intense creative surge.
Shortly after the series was shown in a gallery in Munich which turned out to be more of a fashion house, with the Buddhas playing second fiddle to exquisite statues dressed in high Bavarian mode . Oh well !
